Rana @ the G this Saturday - Pakistan & Hurricanes star Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan suits up this week for the Glenorchy Magpies v University @ KGV.

Rana will join his former Tassie Tigers team mate Brett Geeves who is returning from an extended Christmas break to take on a star studded Uni team in a one day game. The Uni team includes Jason Krejza, Rhett Lockyear, Ben Laughlin & Josh "Gas Axe" Bean. The Glenorchy team are keen to avenge the recent 2 ball loss to Uni in the T20 night game. GET TO THE G!

Glenorchy's Ed Cowan in Boxing Day Test Match

Glenorchy's favorite son ex Sydney-sider Ed Cowan has been selected to play for Australia in the Boxing Day Test match, the biggest stage of all for Australian Cricketers. The Glenorchy Cricket Club is extremely proud to have their first baggy green at the club.

Who would have thought that two guys with different dreams of playing in the boxing day test would collide in an odd club cricket match at Uni early in the season, a game that started their drive to the Australian Cricket team. The game was made famous for Josh Bean using the gas axe to burn the moisture off the pitch to get the game started.
It has been said that both Ed & Hilfy owe a thanks to Tristan Penneyston for a single moment - his dismissal. T got out early and allowed Ed to dominate the game with a match winning 72 no, from here Ed kicked on in state and representative games culminating in an impressive run of 100's and his test selection. Ben Hilfenhaus obviously kicked on after the confidence boosting dismissal of T and hasn't looked back regaining fitness, form & a recall.
The club wishes Ed well, a gentleman, a thinker, emotional, couragous and commited, good luck Eddie, now you are in the firing line big time.

Magpie Ed Cowan to captain Chairman's XI

PKF Tasmanian Tiger and Glenorchy's own Ed Cowan has been chosen to captain a Chairman's XI side against India to be played at Manuka Oval on December 15 and 16. This is a reward for Ed's rich form of late during which he has made three first class centuries in his last three first class matches including 145 for Australia A versus the traveling Kiwi's two weeks ago. Another top score in this match (following Phil Hughes woeful form of late) would have to firm him in for an opening spot for the 1st test against India on the biggest stage of all, Boxing Day at the MCG. From all at KGV Ed we wish you all the best and we know it's not going to be too long before we see the club's first ever player too recieve the prestigious Baggy Green cap.

Glenorchy English Recruit –Ateeq Javid

Glenorchy Cricket Club is pleased to announce its latest recruit Ateeq Javid. Javid currently plays in the Warwickshire squad and will be joining Glenorchy on 18th October for the 2011/12 season. We look forward to him joining our 1st grade team and also providing support to our junior and senior coaching staff.

Javid progressed through the youth ranks at Warwickshire to make his first-class debut in 2009. He was a key member of the England Under-19 top order leading up to and including the World Cup in early 2010, and showed glimpsed of his talent and temperament during a spell in the Warwickshire first XI that summer.

We won the toss and elected to put New Town in to bat on a typical Tasmanian summers day , Wind, Rain and sunshine .

Looked like it was going to be a long day for our boys with the opening patnership putting on 64 runs, the next wicket fell 17 runs later , then the 3rd wicket 112 runs later a very good partnership could have been a match winning partnership , we only took 4 wickets and they ended up getting 235 off their 40 overs a great batting performance from the boys from New Town. Our best bowlers were Josh Harris 2/40 off 8 overs and Aaron Kaye 1/15 off 4 overs.

A big run chase was required from the Glenorchy boys , were we up to it , we beat North Hobart at the same ground a few weeks earlier chasing 231 to win and getting up , so it was not impossible for us to achieve but could we ?

Matty Macdonald and Brodie Ackerley opened the batting for us and made a good fist of getting us off to a good start with a partnership of 73 , both boys were seeing the ball like a basketball , unfortunately matty played on trying a late cut for 30 runs , then 5 runs later Brodie got run out.the next few wickets fell cheaply , Harris and our captain Dylan Williams came together putting a great 50 runs , giving us a real chance for victory . Liam Smith came in after the very contentious wicket of Josh Harris being given out caught down leg side off his thigh pad , oh better move on Smith and Williams put on a partnership very quickly of 63 runs before Williams hit one back to the bowler losing his wicket for a captains innings of 56 , leaving us to get 24 runs off 4 overs could we do it again ? . The last few overs were very nerve racking for us runs were flowing but so too were wickets , a direct hit from New Town run out our 9th batsmen in the 39th over , it was going down to the wire again , we required 3 runs off the last over Liam Smith and James Scott (Jimmy helped us to victory against North Hobart , could he be in another nail biting victory ) Smith gets a single off the first ball 2 to go then a dot ball ,the tension was building , next ball Jimmy hit the ball to mid off running off for a single , it had got past the New Town player so the boys thought a second was a good chance , they made the first , but unfortunetly Liam got run out on the second run, leaving the game in what we thought was a run short for victory , the scorers were checking their score book , doting the I's and crossing the T's , realising that we had actually Tied with New Town , what a fitting result for a great game of cricket , the boys from both team should be congratulated for their conduct and effort on the day , So well done boys,

Round 5 Glenorchy vs Kingborough Risdon Vale Oval

Round 5 we were to play Kingborough in a 2 day game , unfortunately the oval was too wet for play to commence on day 1

Day 2 the following week conditions were perfect for play to start, we won the toss and chose to put Kingborough into bat .

Our opening bowlers Liam Smith and Dale Howlett bowled a good line and were unlucky not to get a couple of wickets, Howlett finally broke through with the score on 29.

Steady wickets fell through the innings, one partnership was the killer for us with a partnership of 83 for the 7th wicket. They finished the innings after 32 overs with 206 for the loss of 8 wickets.

Best bowlers were Josh Harris 3/26 off 4 overs and Dale Howlett 2/20 off 5.

It was then our turn to bat, the innings didnt start off too well for us with both opening batsmen out for ducks, there were a few more ducks to follow, it was hard work for the lads with excellent bowling from the kingborough bowlers, they gave us nothing to play at .

We found it a struggle being bowled out for 74 top run getters were Dylan Alomes 16 and Liam Smith on 14 . We are all now looking forward to taking on New Town in a 1 day game at Shoobridge this Sunday before we have a break for Christmas.

Round six saw Glenorchy 2^nd grade travel to Anzac park for the first of two Saturday Sunday games scheduled for he season.

Lindisfarne won the toss and decided to bowl on a green wicket. Openers Brennan Ploughman and Tom Coates made a good start in tough conditions putting on 34 before Ploughman was out LBW for 18 shortly after drinks Coates was also out for 18 caught behind when the score was just 46. Glenorchy then collapsed to be 6/77 at lunch. After lunch Soggy took the score to 109 before being caught for 33. This brought Orthy and Kevin Johnson together for a brilliant partnership of 36 which gave our bowlers something to defend. Orthy was eventually out for 17 and Kevin was the last man out for 26 leaving us with a disappointing first innings score of 153.

Our strength in second grade this season has been our bowling and fielding. Because of this all the boys were still confident that we could knock Lindisfarne over and record our third win from four games.

Our opening bowlers both bowled tight and were unlucky not to get some early wickets. Eventually first change bowler Tim Faltusz was able to get the breakthrough with the score on 33. This was the first of Tim’s four wickets, the last of which left Lindisfarne at 4/60 and us with a real chance of winning the game. Unfortunately our fielding let us down at a crucial stage just before stumps and we were not able to get any more wickets that evening. The next day all the boys were still confident that we could knock Lindisfarne over however we were only able to get 6 wickets before they passed our score. Lindisfarne was eventually bowled out for 218 with a 65 run lead.

Once again our batting let us down in the second innings at the end of the game we were 8/151. Soggy was again our top scorer with a well made 50. Ploughman also did well with 22, Stebbo got 23 and Sheep did well with 24 batting for 90 minutes at a crucial stage of the match.

This was probably our worst game so far for the season. However it was against the top side and the boys really weren’t far away from getting a win despite not playing anywhere near our best cricket. The loss leaves us .5 of a point outside the 4. If the team can start batting to its full potential and continue its high standards in the field and with the ball we will be pushing for a premiership this year.

Round 4 of the third grade year had us taking North Hobart in a one day game at KGV oval on an absolute cracker of a pitch that looked like it was going to produce at least 200 odd runs for each team.

Couple of late changes to the team before the start of play. Plummer out to the 17's traded out for Damien the star West. And Pattie Mcgowan out for the return of Chris Spotswood for his first on day game in history as they weren't played in the 60s.

Won the toss and decided to bat on a high scoring pitch. Took one look at the West and knew he was due to open the batting. Opened up with West and Gainsford.

Highest opening partnership of the year for us with 37 added before myself getting out for 33 and West then decided to get of the mark. Then with wickets tumbling all around him Westy made a very impressive 59 of about as many balls with Chris Spotswood missing out on a big score left stranded on 5*. Also Brennon 'Silver' Jones suffered minor concussion after trying to duck a yorker and getting hit in the melon and surviving an LBW shout.

We then took the field with a big job in front of us and lost a player early with Chris Spotswood doing his hammy in the first few over's going to retrieve a ball from third man. But we rallied and West continued his stellar day bouncing a batsmen out for the first time in his career and getting the next batter the same way. Then the Faltusz chipped in with a LBW. Then the West show continued with a caught behind. Faltusz ending with 1/14 off his 10. Jake, Elliott and Stickers then chipped in with 4 wickets together to clean up the middle order.

Then West mentioned in the skipper's ear that with the last two wickets left it would a good time for him to come back and get a couple of cheapies for his Michelle.

All was going to plan when Barker took Classic Catch viewers choice to make it 4 wickets but then it all went pear shaped with a drop catch by the keeper costing west the perfect game. Barker then came on finished off the last wicket to claim a great first win for the mighty magpies.

Next week we travel to the Solider's memorial oval to take Clarence on in a one day game to get revenge on the roos for boring us to death three weeks ago.

Luke Webb and Josh Harris opened the bowling both keeping a tight line with Luke Webb taking 3 wickets in his first 4 overs. He had the outswing moving nicely.

After the first 10 overs we had North Hobart 4/38, then unfortunetly we then ran into Nick Russell for North, no matter what we tried we just couldn't get him out.

He was well supported by S Leon putting on a partnership of over 90 runs.

Our captain Dylan Williams was the partnership breaker by bowling Leon out , the wickets fell a bit easier after that wicket with North finishing their 40 overs 8/230.

Pick of Glenorchy bowlers was Luke Webb 3/30 off 8 overs and Brodie Ackerley 2/32 off 6.

We are chasing 231 runs to win, a big ask our batting started steadily with Josh Harris and Brodie Ackerley, our first wicket fell in the 7th over and this bought Luke Webb to the crease. He bowled well and proved his batting was even better.

Wickets fell steadily around Luke and it looked like he was going to run out of partners till along came James Scott. He was lucky to be given not out off his very first ball a waist high full toss, things were not looking good before Jimmy came to the crease, he even copped a hit to the ribs, this was not going to stop him giving up his wicket.

Luke and James hit 17 runs off the second last over, making a victory even closer 3 runs needed off the last over, the boys made victory on the last ball of the match, a 74 run partnership for the last wicket, what a great effort!

North Hobart bowled 74 wides and no balls, this helped contribute to our win.

Pick of the batters Luke Webb 86 and James Scott 12 (very important runs) we are now 2 wins and a draw, a very good start to the season .

Round 8 of the first grade season saw the Magpies taking on defending champs North Hobart in a Kookaburra Cup showdown.

It was a cracking day with a great looking pitch & a fast outfield.

The toss was won by North Hobart skipper Adam “Jordan tattoo” Griffith & had no hesitation in having a stick.

The pies started well with the ball with opening pair Rowdy Matthews & Dingo McGuire taking a few early poles to have the Demons 3-50, North Hobart duo Bucky Rogers & Todd Pinnington then steadied the innings with a nice partnership, before giant killer Wristy Delaney forced Rogers into a false shot to a nice catch by Geeves heading directly at his dead black tooth.

Wickets fell consistently from there to have North Hobart all out for 230 with McGuire taking 4, Matthews 3, Delaney 2 & Cabcharge Ripper 1.

We were very confident of chasing down these runs on this ripping wicket & fast outfield but after losing early wickets at the top of the list we were in desperate need of a partnership at 3-20.

Enter the new Polk Nathan Matthews.

Matthews combined beautifully with my man Dirky Dilger & went about building a great partnership to get us back in striking distance of the Demon’s total.

Unfortunately Rob fell for 63 & from there we struggled for partners to take some of the remaining load off Rowdy’s shoulders.

It was a gallant effort but the Pies fell an agonising 6 runs short with Rowdy left on 94 not out.

With 7 games left in the remaining 4 weeks before Christmas the Pies will be looking to go into the break in the top 4, we’ll be welcoming Luke Butterworth & Ed Cowan back into the fold for 4 of these games so hopefully the success of the Tigers can be contagious for the Pies.

Wednesday night we head down to Kingsford in a Twenty20 & hopefully can get the chocolates.
